What are spider veins?
Spider veins are an increasingly common problem, where small purple, blue or red veins form. These veins appear as connected lines resembling a spider web pattern. On many people, they are relatively inconspicuous because they are confined to a small area, however, some people have larger areas of skin that are affected and the veins become more noticeable.
The clear causes of spider veins and varicose veins have not been determined. Some families seem predisposed to the condition. Injury to the leg and long periods of standing or sitting may contribute to their formation. More women than men seem to develop this condition, perhaps as a result of pregnancy or because of hormones. Doctors have not discovered any clear-cut methods to prevent the onset, although some authorities believe the use of support hose, weight control and exercise may be beneficial.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a technique which involves the use of a very fine needle to inject a solution directly into the veins. The solution causes the blood within the vein to disappear or become less obvious. Larger veins are usually treated first. Each vein may require several injections and most disappear in two weeks to two months.
What results can I expect?
Most patients experience up to 80% improvement, although final results may not be apparent for several months.

How do I prepare?
In most cases, no special preparation is needed for sclerotherapy treatment. You should not shave or apply lotion to the area being treated, however. You may go about your daily routine; eating, drinking and taking medications as you normally would. Please notify us if you are taking any medications.
What happens after the procedure?
Patients can return to normal activities the same day, although strenuous activity and prolonged periods of standing should be avoided for the first two weeks. Elastic stockings are used during this time. Patients who have sclerotherapy report little discomfort. Some experience a slight to moderate burning sensation immediately after the injection, but this disappears within a few seconds.
Does insurance cover this procedure?
Most insurance companies do not pay for sclerotherapy treatment if it is performed for cosmetic reasons. Some insurance companies will cover the procedure if there is pain or discomfort which impedes activity.
